Types of wood For building my didgeridoos I only use very carefully chosen local hardwoods and high-grade woods (oak, holm oak, cherry, European beech, ash, elm, European chestnut, olive, maple and other high-grade and suitable species). And I only use the core wood: I do not use any sawn timber (industrial wood). These types of wood are just as good as eucalyptus for making didgeridoos, and often better. Eucalyptus is a very fast growing wood with a high water content, which only to some extent becomes really hard after it has dried out. The pronounced shrinking process often leads to cracks in the wood. When I work with high-grade woods, I am extremely careful to retain the natural shape and to work along the grain. |
